Werewolves have long captivated audiences with their primal allure and transformative abilities. From horror to fantasy, TV shows featuring these legendary creatures offer a mix of suspense, drama, and supernatural intrigue. Here’s a look at the best werewolf TV shows that have enthralled viewers over the years:

1. Teen Wolf (2011-2017)

MTV’s “Teen Wolf” is a modern cult classic that blends high school drama with supernatural action. The show follows Scott McCall, a teenager who turns into a werewolf and must navigate the challenges of his new identity while dealing with typical adolescent issues. With its engaging storylines and strong character development, “Teen Wolf” has garnered a dedicated fanbase.

2. Being Human (UK) (2008-2013)

“Being Human” is a British series that tells the story of a werewolf, a vampire, and a ghost who share a house and try to live normal lives despite their supernatural conditions. The show expertly balances dark themes with humour and poignant moments, making it a standout in the genre.

3. The Originals (2013-2018)

A spin-off of “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals” dives deeper into the lore of the Mikaelson family, who are the original vampires. The series features a complex world where werewolves play a significant role, particularly through the character of Hayley Marshall. The show’s rich mythology and intricate plots make it a must-watch.

4. Bitten (2014-2016)

Based on Kelley Armstrong’s “Women of the Otherworld” series, “Bitten” centres on Elena Michaels, the world’s only female werewolf. The series explores her struggles with her identity and her relationships with her pack. “Bitten” is praised for its strong female lead and gripping narrative.

5. Hemlock Grove (2013-2015)

Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove” is a horror-thriller series that delves into the mysteries of a small town plagued by gruesome murders. Werewolves feature prominently, especially through the character of Peter Rumancek. The show’s eerie atmosphere and complex characters offer a unique take on werewolf lore.

6. True Blood (2008-2014)

“True Blood” is known for its diverse array of supernatural beings, including werewolves. Set in a world where vampires have come out of the coffin, the series features werewolves like Alcide Herveaux, who add depth and drama to the already intense storyline. The show’s mature themes and complex characters have made it a favorite among fans of supernatural dramas.

7. Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)

“Penny Dreadful” is a gothic horror series that brings together various literary characters, including werewolves. The character Ethan Chandler, portrayed by Josh Hartnett, is revealed to be a werewolf, and his storyline is one of the most compelling aspects of the show. The series’ dark, atmospheric storytelling is a highlight.

8. The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

While primarily focused on vampires, “The Vampire Diaries” features significant werewolf storylines, particularly through the character of Tyler Lockwood. The show’s intricate plotlines and character dynamics, combined with supernatural elements, have made it a hit.

9. Wolfblood (2012-2017)

“Wolfblood” is a British-German series aimed at a younger audience but with a storyline that appeals to all ages. It follows teenagers who are part human, part wolf, exploring their powers and the challenges of living in the human world. The series is praised for its engaging plot and positive messages.

10. Supernatural (2005-2020)

“Supernatural” features a wide range of mythical creatures, including werewolves, across its 15 seasons. The Winchester brothers encounter werewolves in several memorable episodes, blending horror, action, and humour. The show’s longevity and popularity attest to its engaging storytelling and beloved characters.

Writers Choice: True Blood and Supernatural fans may seriously disagree with me here as I know how big the fan bases are for both, but for me it has to be Penny Dreadful. I love the aesthetic, the intrigue and mystery throughout, and even the title is a lovely call back to a bit of very cool British culture. On top of this, Eva Green has to be one of the best actresses you could possibly hope for in a role like this, and Josh Hartnett as our wolf friend felt like a step in a great direction for him and showcased his deeper acting talent than maybe some of the rom coms up until this point had.
